My journey into medicine began with a moment of clarity. While in the ICU early in my training, I noticed the striking resemblance between a mechanical ventilator and the cockpit of an aircraft. The difference, however, was profound—here, I would not be flying planes, but helping save lives.
 

Becoming an intensivist was all I ever wanted.
 

Over a career spanning more than 25 years in Critical Care including directing a quaternary Cardiothoracic Surgical Critical Care Unit and serving in faculty and leadership roles - I had the privilege of practicing at the highest levels of medicine.

Then, unexpectedly, everything changed.

​

I was diagnosed with an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy that left me significantly disabled and away from work for over six months- unsure if I would ever return to the profession I loved.

​

During that time, I found myself reviewing advance directives, finances, and life plans, confronting a reality I had never imagined.

​

But what affected me most was not my own condition—it was witnessing the toll on my caregiver.

​

My wife, a subspecialty consulting physician in Infectious Diseases with over 25 years of experience and a background in clinical care, research, and academic and faculty leadership, became my constant support - managing medications, assisting with daily activities and being by my side every step of the way. 
She ultimately stepped away from her professional responsibilities to care for me fully, demonstrating a level of compassion, strength, and selflessness that profoundly shaped our perspective on caregiving.

Her role in my recovery was not only instrumental—it was transformative.

It made me realize that while I was fortunate to have such extraordinary support, many individuals and families face similar challenges without that level of care.

That realization led to the founding of Compassionate Helping Hands Home Care.
